How Does Blood Pressure Monitoring Work?

Blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day depending on what you are doing, how stressed you are feeling and even how well you slept the night before.

A single reading taken at a pharmacy or GP surgery captures just one moment in time, which means it may not accurately reflect what your blood pressure is doing on a typical day.

24-hour ambulatory monitoring works by taking that guesswork away completely. A small, portable device is worn on a belt or strap and connected to a cuff fitted around your upper arm. At regular intervals throughout the day and night, the cuff gently inflates and records a reading automatically. You simply carry on with your normal routine while the device does the work.

By the end of the monitoring period, dozens of readings have been recorded across a full 24-hour cycle, including during sleep. This gives a much more complete and meaningful picture of your blood pressure than any single measurement could provide, helping to identify patterns, flag potential concerns and support more informed decisions about your health and treatment.

Who needs ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?

24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring may be recommended if you have received a raised reading during a routine appointment and your GP or pharmacist wants to understand whether this is a consistent pattern or an isolated result. It is also used when someone is already taking blood pressure medication and there is a need to assess how well it is controlling levels across a full day and night, not just at the point of a clinical visit.
People who regularly experience dizziness, headaches or fatigue may benefit from monitoring, as these symptoms can sometimes be connected to blood pressure that is fluctuating outside of normal ranges. Those managing long term conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease may also require more frequent blood pressure assessment as part of their routine care.
It is suitable for people of a range of ages and backgrounds, and you do not necessarily need a formal referral to access the service at Hayshine Pharmacy. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, simply speak to one of our pharmacists and we will point you in the right direction.
