Emergency contraception is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, such as a condom splitting or a missed pill. It is not the same as an abortion pill and does not end an existing pregnancy. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation, which stops an egg from being fertilised.
There are two types of oral emergency contraception available through the NHS.
The first is levonorgestrel, commonly known as the morning after pill, which is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex and can be used up to 72 hours afterwards. The second is ulipristal acetate, which can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex and is generally considered more effective the later it is needed.
Our pharmacists will carry out a short, confidential consultation to assess which option is most suitable for you. This will include a few simple questions about your circumstances, any medications you are currently taking and your medical history. There is no need to feel embarrassed.

Emergency contraception is available free of charge through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service.
You do not need a prescription, a GP referral or an appointment. You can simply walk in and our pharmacist will guide you through everything you need to know.
